Dual Enrollment Students-- Please Read
Congratulations on your Dual Enrollment opportunity, and I want to clarify the role of a Dual Enrolled student, especially with the one week overlap of semester 1 ending on January 21 and the start date at ACC on Monday the 17th.
You have to remember that you are an AHS student first and foremost and communication is vital with both your AHS teacher(s) and ACC instructor(s) about your status. Unless you communicate with them DIRECTLY, neither will necessarily know that you are a Dual Enrolled student.
If there is an overlap in classes, you need to send an email including all parties involved explaining your dilemma with conflict in being in two places at the same time.
The next communication should be a telephone call or a Google Meet privately with each to make a plan that works. Your AHS teacher will do everything in his/her power to work with you to assist. You may need to miss one of them and need to have a plan to ensure that the right choices are made.
Options are: I really don’t want to miss my very first college class, is it possible to...and share your thoughts with the teacher openly and honestly.
If the AHS teacher is mandating that you be in the class on a specific day, email your ACC instructor explaining and seeing what you can do to make a plan-- email or call the person.
Do not assume that either party knows that you are Dual Enrolled. The person cannot read your mind nor will the teacher even potentially think about it. Remember, he/she is starting a new semester as well and has a ton going on in his/her world.
Explicit communication is vital and necessary for success.
Second Semester Student Schedules
Students will be able to view their Semester 2 schedules in Synergy starting Wednesday (1/19) at 2:30pm.
The Class Change Form will also be available at the same time. This can be found in the Counselor's Corner of the AHS Website. Please do not email your counselor regarding course changes. Also, please read the "Counselor's Corner" below for more information on appointments during finals.
If you have an open hour on your schedule or a class hour is doubled up please report to E-house office during that hour on January 24th. For any other schedule issues please use the Class Change Form to request a change to your schedule - please do not report to E-house office. It is much easier and efficient for the counseling team to process changes utilizing the form. You will be informed via email of any changes.
Electives will only be changed in extenuating circumstances. We put every effort into putting students into requested classes, but it is not always possible due to schedule conflicts, class sizes, etc.
Counselor's Corner: Students who believe they need a schedule change: You may email your counselor to see if a change in your schedule is feasible. Another option would be to complete the Class Change Form on the Counselor's Corner website. Remember, you need to have a valid reason to change your schedule!
Counselors will not be taking scheduled appointments during finals, but we will be answering emails daily. Keep in mind the volume of emails is very large and it could take some time to respond.
Students can access how to make a counseling appointment by reviewing Student Announcements in their Advisory Brightspace. Mr. Bourdage has urged students during announcements to do this all week.

Every day since Nov. 30, schools have asked us what they can do to help the Oxford community. Schools in the OAA, KLAA and CHSL have designated February as Oxford Strong month, with Friday, Feb. 4, slated as a day for as many schools as possible to be involved in supporting Oxford. The MHSAA and MIAAA are lending its support to help make this a statewide initiative for all member schools.
Official MHSAA merchandise vendor, E.A. Graphics, will be printing T-shirts and sweatshirts supporting “Oxford Strong” – with schools able to purchase those items and then provide them in their communities. E.A. Graphics will be donating the price of the apparel, after costs, directly to Oxford High School Athletic Department. T-shirts, for example, cost $20, with $16.20 donated from each sale.
Schools taking part may ask their spectators to wear the apparel as part of an “Oxford Strong” sporting event at their schools during February. Although organizers have designated Feb. 4 as a day for as many schools as possible to be “Oxford Strong,” it is expected many schools will sponsor “Oxford Strong” events throughout the month.
Alpena High School will be participating in this event. Students can purchase a t-shirt by filling out this google form below. Please bring the money to F-House ASAP.
Parents and Community Members can purchase a t-shirt at this link using "individual Order" Button. https://supportoxfordstrong.com

Congratulations AHS Band!
About a year and a half ago, through a highly competitive audition process, and under the skilled direction of former director of bands Mr. Mike Gozzard, the AHS Wind Ensemble qualified to perform at the state music conference in Grand Rapids, MI. This is a pretty major thing in the band world, on the level of winning a state championship, and it is something to be hugely proud of. They were first scheduled to perform last January, but due to the conference being canceled last year thanks to Covid, the invitation to perform was extended to this year, and therefore our students will finally have the opportunity to bring this accomplishment to fulfillment in a few weeks time on Friday, Jan. 28 at 10am at the Devos Performance Hall in downtown Grand Rapids.
As the incoming band director since Mr. Gozzard's departure at the end of last school year, it has been my pleasure to work with this incredibly talented group of dedicated students as we have prepared a number of highly demanding (but exciting!) pieces of music to show off the very best that the AHS band program has to offer, and I cannot wait to share it with the world. The students have worked incredibly hard and I believe this performance will be a true celebration of musical excellence in Alpena, a program which I personally have benefited from not only as a new staff member but also in the high-quality music education I received going through the program myself when I was a student. If you'd like to see the band play their music for the conference performance, we are offering a free Michigan Music Conference Preview Concert on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 7pm in the AHS auditorium. All are welcome!
