School Lunch Hero Day! ~ They are the BEST!
Counseling Corner: Save the date: May 16 at 7 p.m. We will be holding an online evening event for parents on the topic of mental health called "The Sunset Project: Ending the Silenc." Hosted by recent AHS graduates, this presentation will focus on mental health awareness and breaking the stigma regarding discussing mental health concerns. Mark your calendar now! Additionally that evening, the Superintendent is hosting a panel discussion with local experts on Mental Illness. It will certainly be a great event hosting both groups.
The Sunset Project will be presenting to all AHS health classes May 17. Click here for more information. Please notify your child's health teacher if you do not want them to participate.
FOR MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH in May:
Sophomore Rylee Hartman had the following thoughts when she recently did some free writing on the topic of mental health issues:
"I sit in my room night upon night. My thoughts start to spiral. Who knew the mind could be so nasty? Then all of a sudden I get hit with the "what if" questions. 'What if I'm not good enough? What if they find me easy to replace? What if I'm not a good friend? What if they only believe the rumors about me and not actually how I am?' Thoughts will bully you and push you around until you are numb. It is like drowning, struggling for a breath of air, but only struggling so much more."
Many of us can relate to the never-ending cycle of negative thoughts which can be so consuming. What can you do when this cycle of negative thinking overtakes your nighttime sleeping patterns or even your life in general? According to Rylee, one thing that can be helpful is to surround herself with positive people or a supportive animal. Reading self-help literature can also be a great practice. " I also use affirmations to help replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Dance, exercise and music can also boost a person's endorphin level," said Rylee.
What are you doing to boost your mental health and to contribute to your own personal feelings of wellness? What are you doing to support the people around you? Remember, everyone has their own personal struggles, and you never know what a person might be going through.
Counselors at the high school are available to speak to any student about mental health issues. We also have two therapists from Alcona Health Center available in D House by appointment. In addition, any student can call or text 988 to visit the Lifeline Chat to connect with a trained crisis counselor. Remember, you are never alone!
Forms requesting online learning classes for next year are due May 12.
Get these in to your students' counselor before this time!
Parents, review grades and see if this is an option.
You should make an appointment with your son or daughter's counselor and attempt to get ahead before next school year.

Meet Our Top Ten Percent for 2023
One of the many tasks your graduate will do is to inform the school of their next steps. Please use this survey (QR code) to assist all in gathering information. This includes information on scholarships awarded with amounts, college decisions, or other pathways pursuing. All 12th grade seniors that are not in Early College and Early College 13th year should submit this survey. We know they have seen it in various forms but a lot of information seems to be missing. We are all trying our best to give the acknowledgement all deserve at virtual awards on May 18th and Decision Day on May 26th. Thank you for your assistance.

It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
