EMPOWERING 21ST CENTURY GRADUATES
Cam, congratulations on your selection....
Culturally Minded: Globally Aware- Sensitive to the variety of cultural expressions; Compassionate- Able to empathize with the feelings and priorities of others; Embrace Diversity- Willing to welcome and respect all differences.
Cam has shown such promise at being open minded in situations where it would have been easy to jump on the band wagon with his peers; rather, he took a minute to think through and join in a positive way at interacting with a tense situation. He read the vibes and was willing to think before reacting. I have witnessed this in him previously at school and only mentally noted what good choices he makes and is willing to listen to understand verse reacting; congrats to you, Cam, on thinking beyond your own needs and looking at the bigger picture. Just this week, he had heard about a group of students who were meeting to review AHS School Culture and asked to participate. Again, he is constantly looking at the bigger picture and wanting to do what is right to make the world a better place for all people regardless of race, color, sexual orientation, or national origin. He is a holistic thinker who wants to make AHS and the Alpena community a place that respects all differences. I am excited to see all he has to offer as the year progresses.

Wear Gray on Tuesday!
One of our seniors, Alexis Liske, is undergoing a very serious surgery next Tuesday, March 8th, and we encourage all staff and students to wear gray (the color of her ribbon) that day to show our support for her and her family.
A nice break in the weather allowed for a few of our seniors to paint the rock as well!
Your AHS family is cheering for you, Lexi!
Congrats to our most recent weekly perfect attendance winners! Meadow Smith, Taylor Santamour and Tyler VanCleave, enjoy your gift cards to Campus Closet!
COUNSELING CORNER: We are wrapping up the scheduling process for next year. Please be sure to have your worksheets turned in to your Advisory teacher by Friday! You should also have your choices entered into Synergy StudentVue by then. The counseling appointments are full for this week but have no fear...you can still make an appointment to see one of us in the upcoming weeks. Your counselor will be able to make changes to your selections if necessary for a few more weeks.
If you do not turn in your worksheet and enter your choices into Synergy by FRIDAY, MARCH 11, you will not be allowed any changes moving forward.
The Dual Enrollment process can not start until AFTER Spring Break. Plan to see your counselor then to schedule your ACC class if that is your plan.
AHS Robotics Preparing for Competition and Prepares a New Home
Bob Thomson, a teacher at Thunder Bay Junior High, is also a first year head coach of Alpena High School Robotics. The AHS program emerged over the last decade as a powerhouse at the state level while led by Melissa Doubek. APS invested this year in an expanded space and upgraded equipment to help the new teams led by Coach Thomson to continue the tradition of excellence for AHS Robotics. Thompson has 10+ years with Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROV) coaching. Coach Thomson said, “We combined ROV and FIRST Robotics and are looking forward to adding drones in the future. We will continue and honor what the previous coaches have built while combining resources,”. He currently has 30 students on the roster between FIRST and ROV competitors.
The team competes soon in FIRST Robotics competition, their website describes the competition this way, “Under strict rules, limited time and resources, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.”
AHS Robotics will have two upcoming area competitions in Escanaba on March 18th and Walled Lake High School on April 8. Then they hope to qualify for State competition on Easter weekend.

Exploring Career Pathways
~Amy Attwell, Career Navigator~
On Feb. 24 & 25 current 9th and 10th graders had the opportunity to explore Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs. Each student who participated chose the programs that they were interested in learning more about. The CTE team hopes all students were inspired and learned something new. Taking ownership toward your future by exploring the career pathway avenues of AHS deserves praise and merits to be rewarded. Following the exploration tours, students submitted their names into a drawing for a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card. The student winners were Ella McKenney and Owen Kaiser. CONGRATULATIONS!!
Congrats to Mrs. Pilarski and Mr. Loyer too! They were the teacher winners of Amazon gift cards.
If you are interested in exploring CTE, especially with scheduling for next year underway, please reach out.
