EMPOWERING 21ST CENTURY GRADUATES
AHS Staff Member...Connor Thatcher
Culturally Minded: Globally Aware- Sensitive to the variety of cultural expressions; Compassionate- Able to empathize with the feelings and priorities of others; Embrace Diversity- Willing to welcome and respect all differences.
This month's staff Wildcat Way recipient exemplifies the traits of a Culturally Minded individual as they show great compassion for their students and embrace the diversity of everyone in their classroom. This teacher has consistently noticed students in need of additional support and regularly works with counseling staff and admin to make sure their needs are met, whether those needs are academic, social or emotional. This teacher regularly nominates a diverse group of students for Student of the Week, and highlights their individual strengths and accomplishments that may otherwise go unrecognized. They also show incredible compassion and care when working with students. Recently I had the opportunity to observe this teacher in their advisory and was delighted to see the respect and rapport created amongst members of the group. I was again greatly impressed by this individual when they brought a student in need of immediate support directly to me, leading to an engaging and meaningful conversation. Even though this staff member is a first year teacher, they have shown wisdom and intuition of a veteran teacher. For these reasons I have nominated Mr. Conner Thatcher as this Month's Staff Wildcat Way.

Parent/Teacher Conferences -- Thursday 3-6pm
No School for students on Friday.
We are excited to welcome all parents to visit with our teaching staff, counselors, Administration, School Success, and Dean. Over the past two years, we have not had the opportunity to meet face-to-face, so I hope that you all take full advantage of this opportunity. The teachers will be in the Large Commons, Mini Commons, and Media Center. We have information at the greeting table for parents.
We will NOT be running schedules.
I have the ParentVUE videos below which is how you can access your student schedule. We can help you when you arrive if you need anything or have questions. We will be located at the entrance to of the back oval.
Campus Closet will be open during conferences, and they would love to have you all visit and make a purchase! If you have not visited the store, you will be amazed at the great products that they have to sell.
Are you new to ParentVUE? Watch this video to see an overview of all the features. The features are the same for TBJH and AHS. If you need an activation key, please call the school.
Activating my ParentVUE account - call AHS for an activation key.

Counselor Corner: Spring break is almost here! Take a good look at your grades and progress this week. Are you behind? Do you have grades lower than you would like? Are you on track with any online classes you may have? If you are needing/wanting to improve your grades Spring Break is the perfect time to do that. Check with your teachers this week to see what you can do over break to get back on track. Even if a student spends only an hour a day over break working on school work it will help get their grades up and back on track.
Letters below will outline the plans for testing this spring for each grade.
All Juniors that will be taking the MSTEP on April 20 or April 21 2022 MUST follow these steps BELOW before testing day.

ATTENDANCE UPDATE FOR SEMESTER 2, 2022
After meeting with the Attendance Committee and reviewing the current attendance trends based upon reported health incidents, it was determined that AHS will suspend the current Attendance Policy (Page 18 of Alpena High School Student/Parent Handbook) based upon the current COVID/quarantine/sickness issues facing our student population and families for SEMESTER 2 as of March 16, 2022.
There have been many inquiries regarding the Attendance Review Board (ARB) and doctor’s notes. Currently, over 260 AHS students have 8 or more absences; it is nearly half of what we had reported out in semester 1; however, it is a significant amount and we still have three months of school remaining. Attending school has been a struggle for some families with multiple COVID outbreaks and the recent stomach bug, but with Brightspace and teacher communication, students have been able to stay connected and continue learning. It is not optimal, but it is the situation that AHS students are facing due to the health concerns. Again, this is not precedent setting and will not stop the Truancy cases from moving forward with the Dean Piper and School Success-- communication about issues facing attendance is vital to avoid Truancy.
Congratulations Makayla Jack, Leia Cumper, and Jack Cook. Enjoy shopping at Campus Closet!
