"For 11 years, Denmark was the whole world's child porn mecca - why did no one intervene?
In the 1970s, Denmark provided pedophiles all over the world with child pornography - because here it was legal. Leading experts urged parents to experiment with their children, and if one said no, one was a prude.
Shortly before Christmas Eve in 1968, the then Minister of Justice Knud Thestrup took the pulpit in the Parliament of the Danish Folkting to talk about porn.
At the time, it was a year ago that texted/written porn had been released, and now the Conservative minister thought the time had come for the obscene images.
Only a few politicians protested against the proposal, because Denmark was entering the golden age of sexual freedom, and now it had to stop being outraged by a pair of bare breasts.
These are people you see on the street that you would not dream of buying it.
Willy Strauss, owner of the former porn store Blue Movie.
But one of those who opposed the proposal was the Minister of Justice's Party colleague Ellen Strange Petersen. She was worried about the children and that "cynical" foreigners would come to Denmark and make money from exploiting minors. Despite her protests, however, the bill was voted through six months later by 125 members of parliament, and Denmark became the first country in the world to allow "lewd images".
But Ellen Strange Petersen was right - the new law came to affect the children. Denmark became the world's leading distributor of child pornography, and from 1969 and 11 years onwards it was completely legal to buy and sell, edit and publish pictures and videos of child abuse in Denmark.
Physical abuse of children was still illegal, but the photographs and films were not, so the child pornography exploded and no one allegedly raised an eyebrow.
In the vast majority of other countries, child pornography was banned, and therefore almost all the material confiscated in those countries came from Denmark.
In Vesterbro's many sex cinemas you could buy tickets for child pornography, in a newspaper ad from Hawaii Bio on Vesterbrogade, for example. enticed with the film commercial "Child Sex - Only 10 Years", and one of the country's leading porn production companies published films and magazines with titles such as "Sucking Daddy", "Child Love" and "Incest Family".
As Jyllands-Posten has previously described, there is at the Royal Library today a locked collection that contains all the child pornographic material that was published during that period. A testimony of a black period in Danish history, which until now it has been possible to apply to be allowed to see.
But Minister of Culture Joy Mogensen has now, on the basis of Jyllands-Posten's stories, chosen to close access to the collection to all but researchers at the minimum PhD level. "
