This week in English, learners completed their final biography writing on Ernest Shackleton, independently applying their planning, editing, and writer’s knowledge to produce a polished piece of work.
They then explored the difference between fact and opinion, learning how to identify each and justify their choices using evidence. This supported both their non-fiction writing and critical reading skills.
This week in maths, learners strengthened their understanding of algebra by solving one-step and two-step equations. They focused on finding unknown values by applying inverse operations and checking that their solutions made sense within the context of the equation.
📢 Exciting Enrichment Opportunities
Learners can also take part in exciting external maths challenges:
Human Calculator – Sign up using this link
AMS Olympiad – Full details available here
These opportunities are a great way for learners to extend their problem-solving skills beyond the classroom.
This week in Science, learners began exploring refraction, investigating how light changes direction when it passes through different mediums. Through a hands-on investigation, they observed how the appearance of light is affected depending on the material it travels through, prompting thoughtful discussion and curiosity. Learners also made connections to learning from earlier years, linking refraction to the idea of resistance and how resistance can influence the flow of things. This helped deepen their understanding by recognising how scientific concepts build and connect over time.
This week, learners explored myths and legends through a hands-on art activity. They made salt dough in pairs and used it to design their own mythical or legendary creatures, carefully shaping and combining 3D elements to add texture, detail, and character to their creations. This activity encouraged creativity and imagination.
