閻魔は仏教・ヒンドゥー教などでの地獄・冥界の王で、死者の生前の罪を裁く神とされています。閻魔王の法廷には、浄玻璃鏡という特殊な鏡があり、すべての亡者の生前の行為をのこらず記録し、裁きの場で映し出すと言われます。そのため、裁かれる亡者が閻魔王の尋問に嘘をついても、たちまち見破られるということです。この堂に安置する閻魔大王坐像は、高さ206cmあり、葛飾区内最大のものです。

Yama(Enma) is the King of the hell/nether world in Buddhism and Hinduism who is a God judging the sins of the dead. In the court of King Yama(Enma), there is a special mirror called "Johari no kagami" which records all the deceased's behaviors before death and presents at the place of judgment. Therefore, even if the deceased person lies to the questioning of King Yama(Enma), it is to be found out quickly. The seated statue of the great king Yama(Enma) is 206 cm height and it is the largest one in Katsushika-ku.
