【東京都指定天然記念物 | Tokyo Metropolitan-designated Natural Monument (Plant)】

オニバスはスイレン科の一年生浮葉植物で、一属一種の原始的形質をそなえた特徴ある植物です。日本では九州・四国および本州の西半分の低地池沼に自生地が確認されています。水元のオニバスは戦前から小合溜井一帯に自生していましたが、都市化が進むなかで絶滅したと思われていました。ところが東京都水産試験場A18号池において自生が確認され、昭和58年夏には池の全面を覆うにいたっています。学術上貴重な植物であるとともに、都内に確認される数少ない自生植物です。 (東京都教育委員会)

Onibasu, Euryale ferox Salisb., an annual plant which belongs to Nymphaeaceae, is a floating-leaved plant. It has primitive characters with one genus and one species. It grows widely in lowland pounds from Kyushu, Shikoku to the west area of the main island in Japan. This euryale ferox in Mizumoto had grown in Koaitdamei before the war, but it was thought that it was extinct because of urbanization. However, it was later found growing widely in the A18 pond of Tokyo fisheries experiment station ( the current pond in Mizumoto park). In summer 1983 it covered the surface of the pond. This plant is important academically and one of a few wild plants in Tokyo. (Tokyo Metoropolitan Board of Education)
