イチョウの下の祠

Small shrine under the ginkgo tree

葛飾は川に囲まれているため多くの水害に見舞われました。江戸時代のこと、大雨が降りこの川の土手も決壊しそうになりました。村人たちが必死に堤防を守ろうとしましたがどうにもなりませんでした。その時、この地の名手であった源右衛門が自らの命を捧げ念仏を唱えながら濁流に入っていくと、水の勢いが弱まり決壊を免れました。村人たちは感謝し、ここにイチョウの木と水神様を祭りました。

Katsushika was hit by a lot of floods because of surrounded by many rivers. It was in the Edo period, its was heavy rains and the river banks was about to break. Villagers tried to protect, but couldn't do anything. At that time, a master of this area who were praying to Amida Buddha and entered the muddy flow dedicating his life. then water flow has weakened, escaping from bank break. The villagers were very much thanks and celebrated the ginkgo tree and water god here.
