ゲートボールは日本発祥のスポーツです。第二次世界大戦が終結してから2年後の1947年、戦争後の物資不足で遊び道具のない子供のために、鈴木栄治氏がイギリス発祥の球技クロッケーを参考にして考案しました。高度経済成長期に高齢者向けスポーツとして爆発的に流行、現在では日本だけでなくアジア各国にも普及しています。葛飾区には、上千葉南公園・西亀有・上平井・立石の4つのゲートボール場があります。

Gateball is a Japan originated sports. In 1947, two years after the end of World War II, Mr. Eiji Suzuki invented it with reference to croquet originated in England for children who have no play equipments due to lack of supplies after the war. It became an explosive epidemic among the elderly during high economic growth period in Japan, and is now widespread not only in Japan but in Asian countries. In Katsushika City, there are four gateball courts: Kamichiba South Park, Nishikameari, Kamihirai, and Tateishi.
