餓鬼(がき)とは、生前の悪行のむくいで、仏教で説く六道の中の餓鬼道に落とされてしまった魂や無縁仏となっ魂のことで、常に飢えと乾きに苦しんでいます。施餓鬼とは、そういう者たちに飲食(おんじき)を施して救い、その功徳(くどく)を先祖供養のために振り向けたり、この世にいる自分たちの極楽往生を願うる法要です。法問寺においても、文化3年(1806)に施餓鬼音楽法要が行われました。この碑はそれを記念し、寛政8年(1796)に出羽三山を信仰する人々によって建てられた「奉納経大乗妙典碑」を彫り直して作ったものです。

"Gaki" (hungry ghost) is a soul that has been dropped into Gaki world in the six realms of Buddhism, or a soul that has become an unrelated Buddha, because of evildoing during the lifetime. Gaki is constantly suffering from hunger and dryness. "Segaki" is a memorial service serving foods and drinks to Gaki, and divert those charity reward to ancestors' memorial service and wish for own paradise in this world. At Homonji Temple, the Segaki music memorial service was held in Bunka 3 (1806). This monument was made by re-engraving the old monument to commemorate the ceremony.
