安政2年(1855)10月2日午後10時ごろ、関東地方南部でM7クラスの地震が発生しました。震源は東京湾北部・荒川河口付近と考えられ、安静大地震(安政江戸地震)と呼ばれています。深川、本所、下谷、浅草の被害が特にひどく、焼失面積は1.5km四方におよび，犠牲者は1万人近くに上りました。この石造題目塔は、地震の死者を供養するために、歌舞伎俳優 森田勘弥の妻が発起人となって建てたものです。

There was M7 class large earthquake struck the southern part of the Kanto region around 10 pm on October 2, Ansei 2 (1855). The seismic centre was thought to be near the estuary of the Arakawa River in the northern part of Tokyo Bay, and it's called the Ansei large earthquake (Ansei Edo earthquake). The damages to Fukagawa, Honjo, Shitaya, and Asakusa were particularly severe, burned area was 1.5kmsquare, victims of the earthquake was close to 10,000. This stone pagoda was built by the wife of Kabuki actor Kanya Morita as a memorial service for the dead of the earthquake.
