一里塚 は、江戸日本橋を起点に、一里(約4㎞)ごとに設けられました。塚は道路の両側に設置され、榎などが植えられました。榎は根を深く広げることから、塚の崩壊を防ぐ役割があったようです。一里塚の起源については諸説ありますが、現在では一里塚といえば、慶長九年(1604)に設置が命じられた江戸時代のものをさします。亀有の一里塚は、千住宿から一里、江戸日本橋から三里のところに位置します。現在ではその様子を伺うことはできませんが、明治の末頃までは塚の跡が残っていたようです。塚の位置は、ここから東へおよそ10m先にありました。(葛飾区教育委員会)

There are various views about the origin of Ichirizuka, but today it is the one in the Edo period which was ordered to be set in Keicho 9 (1604). Kameari's Ichirizuka is located 1 ri from Senju-juku and 3 ri from Edo Nihonbashi. It cannot see today, but it seems the mound remained until the end of the Meiji era. The original location of the Ichirizuka mound was about 10 m east from here.
