安政2年(1855)10月2日午後10時ごろ、関東地方南部でM7クラスの地震が発生しました。震源は東京湾北部・荒川河口付近と考えられ、安政江戸地震と呼ばれています。深川、本所、下谷、浅草の被害が特にひどく、焼失面積は1.5km 四方、犠牲者は1万人近くに上りました。この地震により、東光寺にあった石造地蔵像が破壊されてしまったため、住職たちが喜捨を募って新たに作ったのが現在の石造地蔵像です。

There was M7 class large earthquake struck the southern part of the Kanto region around 10 pm on October 2, Ansei 2 (1855). The seismic centre was thought to be near the estuary of the Arakawa river in the northern part of Tokyo Bay, and it's called the Ansei Edo Earthquake. The damages to Fukagawa, Honjo, Shitaya, and Asakusa were particularly severe, burned area was 1.5km square (2.25km2), victims of the earthquake was close to 10,000. The earthquake destroyed the stone Jizo statue at Toko-ji temple. The chief priests solicited contributions and newly made the current stone statue.
