江戸では、麻疹や疱瘡を防ぐ色とされた赤色の衣装を着た願人坊主が、謡い踊りながら、お札やおまじないの「くくり猿」を売り歩きました。この神泉遺構は、願人坊主が神仏に祈願する際に、水を浴びて体の汚れを落とす水垢離を行ったところで、旧来の形状がよく保存されています。

In Edo, "Gannin priest" (begging priest) dressed in a red costume (red was said to prevent measles and smallpox), sang, danced, and sold bills and magical charm "Kukuri saru". This Shinsen remains is a place where the Gannin priest did cold-water ablutions for purifying when praying to the gods and Buddha. It's well preserved in their traditional shape.
