Kanzeon Bosatsu and Dainichi Nyorai at Shibamata Taishakuten

On the south of the Shibamata Taishakuten temple precincts, there are two "Gezanbutu", Kanzeon Bosatsu (Bodhisattva) statue and a Dainichi Nyorai (Vairocana) statue. "Gezanbutu" is a Buddhist statue that was enshrined at the summit of Mt.Fuji during Shinbutsu-Shugo (the syncretistic fusion of Shintoism and Buddhism), and that was descended from Mt.Fuji by Shinbutsu-Bunri (the separation of Shintoism and Buddhism) after the Meiji Restoration. Two bronze Buddha statue, on the left as one faces, it is the Kanzeon Bosatsu (Bodhisattva) statue made in the Muromachi period (1400s). The statue's arms and gathered hair seem to have been added later. On the right, it is the Dainichi Nyorai (Vairocana) statue made in the Edo period. On the back of both statues, there are countless scars which is thought to have been made when descending from Mt. Fuji. Despite some of statues had been destroyed or thrown into the crater, this is one of the precious statues that survived and transported from the top of Mt. Fuji with the great effort.
