Supervisor of Transportation
SUPERVISOR - TRANSPORTATION
PRIMARY FUNCTION
To administer the affairs of the transportation department in such a way as to provide the best possible services with the financial resources available.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Possess the skills necessary for planning, budgeting and directing the pupil transportation program (including the hiring and supervising of bus drivers, establishing routes and schedules and supervising the bus maintenance program).
2. Demonstrate both leadership and team work abilities in previous work experience.
3. Possess enough combined knowledge and experience in school, public passenger, military or industrial transportation operations to warrant the recommendation of the Director of Transportation and Facilities.
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Administer, through the shop foreman, the program for keeping all the school division’s cars, trucks and school buses in good operating condition.
2. Administer a system which provides a maintenance and service chart for each vehicle.
3. Administer the public transportation program.
4. Accept applications for school bus drivers and bus garage personnel.
5. Develop and administer a transportation program to meet all the requirements of the daily instructional program and extracurricular activities, assuring that the best available vehicles are used for transporting students to out-of-county activities.
6. Recruit, training and supervise all transportation personnel and make recommendations on their employment, transfer, promotion and release.
7. Conduct both pre-service and in-service training of all school bus drivers.
8. Prepare routes for all public schools in the district.
9. Prepare and update bus schedules for all public schools in the district.
10. Prepare monthly payroll reports.
11. Authorize purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies and prepare an annual budget for the department.
12. Maintain safety standards in conformance with state, federal and insurance regulations
13. Cooperate with school principals and others responsible for planning special school trips.
14. Take an active role in solving discipline problems occurring on school buses.
15. Develop annual recommendations for vehicle equipment and personnel needs based on a survey of resident students, distance and grade levels.
16. Act as liaison with parents for complaints and requests.
17. Conform with all state laws and regulations regarding school transportation.
18. Submit all reports required by state authorities.
19. Complete and dispatch insurance reports.
20. Advise the Director of Transportation and Facilities on road conditions for decisions on school closings and delays during inclement weather.
21. Attend appropriate meetings and conferences.
22. Develop a three-year plan for the upgrading of the bus fleet and vehicle pool.
23. Plan for an annual auction of surplus vehicles, equipment and materials.
24. Administer, through school staffs, a safety training program for students.
25. Administer the communication network for buses.
26. Other duties as assigned by Director of Operations
27. Hold or obtain a CDL License with passenger and school bus endorsement

EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board’s policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of supervisory personnel.
