Computer Hardware Technician

TITLE: COMPUTER HARDWARE TECHNICIAN

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Provides maintenance and repair services to all computer hardware and computer hardware peripherals in the division.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of the operation, uses and capabilities of computer hardware and software; general knowledge of TCP/IP networks and Microsoft Active Directory; thorough knowledge of methods and techniques used to maintain and repair computer hardware and software; thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows, HTML, G Suite, and Microsoft Office; thorough knowledge of the hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to read and understand maintenance manuals and to work from sketches, drawings and diagrams; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates;.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in the maintenance and repair of computer hardware and software.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Be A+ Certified or be able to obtain A+ certification within two years of employment in the capacity as a technician.

2. Have a general understanding of Windows 7 and Windows 10 operating systems.

3. Have a general knowledge of Microsoft networks.

4. Know the basics of terminating and installing different types of cables and wall mounts for network operation.

5. Have basic computer programming skills to trace faulty operation of computer programs.

6. Have the communication skills to work with hardware and software vendors as well as hardware and software technical support personnel in order to resolve computer problems.

7. Have the personal human relations skills to work with division personnel and students in addressing technology problems.

REPORTS TO: Coordinator of Technology

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Set up, configure and maintain PC's and Mac’s for stand-alone and network operation.

2. Set up simple network printing using IP printing services.

3. Install appropriate user software and peripheral operation software for computers.

4. Setup and provide basic troubleshooting to peripherals and third party devices connected to our computers and network systems.

5. Perform various computer upgrade tasks such as adding RAM, adding DVD-ROM drives, upgrading motherboards and upgrading other electronic components attached to the motherboard of the computer.

6. Perform appropriate troubleshooting techniques in an attempt to determine hardware and software problems.

7. Differentiate between hardware and software problems in troubleshooting.

8. Perform simple network troubleshooting tasks on school division computers and servers.

9. Perform simple network operations such as adding and deleting users as well as setting up simple configurations.

10. Use human resources, Internet bulletin boards, software packages and technical websites to find answers to various network, software and hardware problems.

11. Develop, maintain and administer preventive maintenance plans for the School Division’s computers.

12. Perform other duties as directed by the school division’s Technology Director.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Twelve month year. Salary to be established by the Board.

EVALUATION:

Performance on this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of certificated personnel.
