Building Trades Teacher

Performs instructional duties, in appropriate academic disciplines, to high school students enrolled in the Building Trades curriculum at Franklin County High School. Central to the program is the management and conduct of a classroom and practical laboratory for teaching the related skills to high school students. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following actions:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

Candidates must hold, be eligible for, or be willing to obtain a Virginia collegiate professional or Technical Professional licensure with endorsement in applicable subject area. To qualify for the provisional license, the applicant must meet the following Building Trades endorsement requirements: 

1.      Work experience in electricity, plumbing, carpentry and masonry equivalent to two years of occupational experience or 4,000 hours in the field within the last five years in electricity, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC and masonry. 

2.      5+ years of significant experience preferred 

3.      OSHA certification 

4.      VDOE Industry Credential

5.      Class A, B, or C contractor license is preferred 

Endorsement requirements.

1.      The candidate must have graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in the trade and industrial education program subject area for which the candidate is seeking endorsement; or

2.      A candidate who has graduated from an approved teacher preparation program that is not in the trade and industrial education program subject area for which the candidate is seeking endorsement must have:

a.      A current state licensure or industry certification based upon the prescribed standard or examination, if applicable; and

b.      Evidence of at least two years or 4,000 clock hours of satisfactory occupational experience within the past five years in the teaching specialty for which endorsement is sought. A candidate whose occupational experience has not been within the last five years must participate in a supervised technical update related to the teaching specialty or area of endorsement or complete a supervised internship of work experience of not less than six weeks related to the area of endorsement or teaching specialty.

 

To obtain a Technical Professional License. An endorsement in a specialized trade and industrial education area will be granted to individuals who have:

1.      Been recommended by an employing Virginia educational agency;

2.      A license or are certified as a professional practitioner in the endorsement area sought, if applicable, or can demonstrate competency in that area of trade and industrial education;

3.      Evidence of at least two years or 4,000 clock hours of satisfactory occupational experience within the past five years in the specialty area in which they are seeking endorsement. Candidates whose occupational experience has not been within the last five years must participate in a supervised technical update related to the teaching specialty or area of endorsement or complete a supervised internship of work experience of not less than six weeks related to the area of endorsement or teaching specialty; and

4.      Completed professional studies requirements (human growth and development: three semester hours; curriculum and instructional procedures in career and technical education: three semester hours; and applications of instructional technology or classroom and behavior management: three semester hours).

If an individual is seeking an initial license in the Commonwealth with an endorsement in the area of career and technical education, an industry certification credential, as defined in 8VAC20-22-10, in the area in which the teacher seeks endorsement is required. If a teacher seeking an initial license in the Commonwealth has not attained an industry certification credential in the area in which the teacher seeks endorsement, the board may, upon request of the employing school division or educational agency, issue the teacher a provisional license to allow time for the teacher to attain such credential.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS: 

Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classroom, technical lab, business site off campus. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. (Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required.) Regular Instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Daily personal and close contact with students to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members and parents is required. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary.
