Speech/Language Pathologist

                                 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The primary function of the speech/language pathologist is to provide diagnosis and remediation for students with speech and language disorders.

Qualifications:

·                     masters degree in speech/language pathology or complete 15 hours in language, articulation, fluency, voice, and                   hearing impairment;

·                      competency in administering and interpreting tests for speech/language impairment;

·                    ability to design, implement and evaluate a comprehensive education program appropriate to the educational                     needs of the speech/language impaired student;

·                      knowledge of the local, state and national facilities for serving individuals with speech/language disabilities; and

·                      hold a valid Virginia driver’s license.

Reports to:      School administrators and Director of Pupil Personnel Services

Performance Responsibilities:

1.         Implement screening and/or referral procedures to identify students needing speech/language evaluation                 which will include:

a.         screening all students who are new to the division, all kindergartners, all pre-school children                            referred within the division and all those referred from private schools;

b.        screening the hearing of all students in grades 3, 7 and 10; and

c.        referring students whose speech problems may have an organic cause to one or more physicians                   before enrolling them in therapy. 

2.         Process evaluation information that will include:

a.         obtaining diagnostic information through formalized testing;

b.         gathering information from teachers and parents to assist in assessing specific student problems;

c.         developing long-range goals for student individualized education program (IEP); and

d.         developing short-term goals for each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).

3.         Implement an appropriate therapy plan based on written objectives that will include:

a.        scheduling and grouping students according to the nature and severity of their communication                       disorder(s);

b.        implementing therapy activities in a logical sequence; and

c.        using materials compatible with student’s age and interest (this includes purchasing and maintaining            materials within each school).

4.         Manage program and maintain records that will include:

a.         informing staff of program services;

b.        conferring with parents and teachers of students enrolled in therapy;

c.        maintain on-going records of student’s performance in order to evaluate student’s  progress in                       therapy; and conducting annual reviews and updating short-term objectives.

5.         Serve as a resource person that will include:

a.    providing in-service education to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech                  improvement and assist in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community,        as appropriate.

6.         Perform other duties as assigned by the administrator and/or the Director of Pupil Personnel Services.

Terms of Employment:

Ten-months a year with the salary to be established by the Franklin County School Board.

Evaluation:

Performance on this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations which address evaluation of certificated personnel.
