JOB DESCRIPTION – BUS DRIVER

The bus driver is responsible for ……

Qualifications:

• Must be at least 21 years of age

• Must have a high school diploma, GED or higher

• Must demonstrate a previous dependable work ethic and attendance record

• Must possess a good driving record and provide a copy of your DMV record

Reports to: Director of Operations

Performance Responsibilities:

• The ability to pull open a hood on a bus with an estimated force of lifting fifty (50) pounds.

• Stoop low enough or get on your knees to visually inspect under the vehicle, the drive shaft, exhaust system, frame, spring and mounts and tires.

• Operate emergency door and/or roof hatches and/or emergency windows.

• Assist students from the bus emergency exits by lifting children out roof hatches and or emergency windows.

• Install single tire chains on buses weighing approximately twenty-five (25) pounds each.

• Operate entrance door on bus requiring a pull or push of thirty (30) pounds.

• Operate wheel chair lift including stooping/bending to tie-down chairs for transportation.

• Lift preschool children in and out of vehicles weighing up to forty (40) pounds.

• Physically capable of operating a standard shift bus if necessary.

Requirements:

• Successfully complete twenty-four (24) hours of classroom training which is conducted by the school bus driver trainers.  

• Successfully complete drug and alcohol training which is conducted by an outside firm.  In addition, you will be tested for drugs and alcohol as part of this process.  A positive test for either will eliminate you from consideration.  This training is part of the twenty-four (24) hours noted above.  

• Take a pass a test (four (4) different parts) at DMV to obtain your CDL learners permit.  The learners permit (school bus and passenger endorsement) is required for you to proceed to the next step.  

• Successfully complete a minimum of fourteen (14) hours on the road with a bus driver trainer.  You will drive each type of bus that is currently in our fleet.  

• Successfully complete a pre-trip inspection.  A record of successful completion will be placed in your file.

• Pass a road test conducted by a bus driver trainer to obtain your CDL from DMV.  

• Successfully complete a minimum of ten (10) hours of training with one of the bus drivers that is under contract with the school board.  Students will be on the bus for this training and you will actually drive the route of the driver that is training you.  

• Successfully complete and return a physical by a doctor that is in the approved Carilion network system.  This physical is paid by the school board and one of the bus driver trainers will supply you with a copy of this form.  The completed form will be placed in your file.  We reserve the right to have the physical completed during any phase of this process.

• After you have successfully completed the above requirements you will be given a letter from the supervisor or director of transportation indicating that you have successfully completed all of the requirements to become a school bus driver.  

Terms of Employment:     Salary and conditions to be established by the Franklin County School Board.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board’s policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
