Job Description
The role of the Reading Specialist is to provide high-quality instruction, support, and leadership in order to produce high-quality outcomes in the area of Reading and Literacy for the students
Qualifications:
● Hold a valid Virginia teaching license
● Reading Specialist Endorsement
● Have at least three years of successful full-time experience in which the teaching of reading was an important responsibility
● Must have an understanding of the major theories and empirical research that describe the cognitive, linguistic, motivational, and sociocultural foundations of reading
instruction
Reports to: Literacy Coordinator
Performance Responsibilities:
Work closely with the division Literacy Coordinator to collaborate on Virginia Literacy Partnership (VLP) and Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) initiatives
Work collaboratively to support VLP tutors by providing support and training
Assist with VLP division representative checklists (FALL/SPRING)
Assist with VLP screening criteria and with data review
Have knowledge of scientifically based reading assessment and instruction
Work collaboratively with large teams of teachers to analyze and use assessment data to examine the effectiveness of specific intervention practices
Assist with the preparation of professional development materials
Serve as a resource to colleagues in providing professional development and outreach services
Assist with vetting and preparing book studies for teachers and administrators
Providing post-LETRS professional development in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, and writing
Work with teachers in LETRS courses on completing the Bridge to Practice section
Meet regularly with the classroom teachers to plan literacy instruction that correlates with the individual student’s needs or as requested by the classroom teacher.
Collaborate with teachers in all departments to promote the learning and implementation of best practices in literacy instruction
Provide support through modeling, co-teaching, planning, and or providing resources
Have a working knowledge of Response to Intervention (RtI)
Assist with providing training, consultation, and support to the Reading Intervention Specialist (RIS) and special education teachers
Work with RIS to provide intensive research-based interventions and remediation
Assist with monitoring RtI paperwork
Attend regular RIS meetings and provide leadership at the meetings
Perform other duties as assigned by the Literacy Coordinator
Terms of Employment: Ten month year. Salary to be established by the School Board.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of administrative
personnel.
