Head Custodian - BFMS

Primary Function:  The head custodian is responsible for ensuring the school and grounds are a safe, clean, attractive and comfortable environment for the education of students.

Qualifications:

• Must have a high school diploma, GED (or higher).

• Must be at least 21 years of age.

• Possess administrative skills sufficient to supervise a custodial staff to achieve both effective performance and good morale.

• Maintain acceptable standards for keeping the school clean, safe and attractive.

• Dependable, trustworthy and take pride in the maintaining of the school.

• Mindful of the contact with students and present self as an appropriate role model.

Reports to:      Building principal or his/her designated assigned principal.

Performance Responsibilities:

• Mop, sweep, vacuum rooms, halls and other assigned areas daily and remove trash from the building.

• Clean classrooms daily, including the cleaning and disinfecting of urinals, sinks and commodes and check periodically through the day to see that the restrooms are properly used and that the deodorization procedures remain effective.

• Attend the heating, cooling and ventilation systems daily, as required, for proper maintenance and make maintenance checks.

• Cooperate with preventive maintenance personnel in the servicing of major appliances and equipment.

• Assist the cafeteria staff daily in readying the cafeteria for meals, cleaning the cafeteria after lunch and assist with heavy lifting that is sometimes necessary in stocking refrigerators and storerooms (if assigned).

• Provide emergency clean-up service, make minor repairs and replace fluorescent tubes.

• Order, receive, store and inventory supplies and products needed by the custodial staff and assist the principal in preparing the annual custodial budget.

• Mop, wax, and buff all hallways weekly.

• Attend to the daily security of the building – opening and locking the building as assigned.

• Perform the necessary grounds keeping duties to keep the grounds safe, clean and attractive.

• Cooperate with faculty and staff not to disrupt the education process and give them specialized assistance with special projects during custodial work shifts, when it is necessary to do so.

• Plan and see that the reconditioning needs of the school are carried out each summer to ready the school for a new academic year; consult with the principal, make work schedules, supervise temporary summer employees, etc.

Terms of Employment:   Twelve-month position.  Salary and conditions to be established by the School Board.

Evaluation:  Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the School Board’s policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
