Autism Specialist

JOB DESCRIPTION – AUTISM SPECIALIST

The autism specialist will serve the needs of students with autism in a manner which is beneficial to the student.

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in special education.

• Knowledge of research based behavioral intervention or related field.

• Knowledge of positive behavior intervention guidelines, functional analysis procedures and knowledge of currently accepted educational methodology for students with 

autism.

• Possess good working and relationship skills with co-workers.

• Work cooperatively with the autism team staff to provide an appropriate education for each student.

• Five (5) years’ experience in providing educational programs to students with autism.

• Hold a Virginia driver’s license.

• Autism certificate issued by the Virginia Council of Autism preferred.

Reports to:   Director of Pupil Personnel Services

Responsibilities:

• Under direction of the Director of Pupil Personnel Services

• Act as consultant to staff and students in special day classes for students with autism.

•   Participate as a member of the educational team to design and supervise implementation of classroom programs for students with autism using research based behavioral 

intervention.

• Act as “teacher of record” for individual in-home programs.

• Provide training to classroom staff, support personnel, and parents as indicated by the IEP team.

• Support students through transition into new education placements.

• Maintain appropriate documentation, records and reports.

• Other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent, Director of Pupil Personnel Services, or designee.

Terms of Employment:  Ten-months a year with salary to be established by the Franklin County School Board.

Evaluation:  Performance on this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations which address evaluation of 

certified personnel.
