Week Six: Setting
Monday 3/10: Journal Entry: 350 words.
Topic: Go back to your favorite cafe and describe people's appearances. Describe their clothes, gestures, bodies, and, especially, their faces.
You can also observe someone's appearance elsewhere (at home, etc.)
Feel free to spiral off this topic into musings of your own choice
Required reading: "Loss of Face" (reader, 33-44).
Note: the article is a bit on the long side, but it's fascinating
Tuesday 3/11: Read Chapter 5 of Writing Fiction, "Fictional Place" (164-78).
Thursday 3/7: Pick ONE of the first five prompts listed on pages 206-207 of Writing Fiction. You can use characters from the story you submitted last week or make up new characters for the exercise you choose. Word count: 600 words. *** POST THIS ASSIGNMENT UNDER "WRITING EXERCISES: 3/13--Setting"
Friday 3/8: Read "Cat's Cradle" in your reader, pp. 116-121 (reader #s). Note how Aciman uses setting as you read the story.
