Week Six: Setting

Monday 3/10: Journal Entry: 350 words.

    • Topic: Go back to your favorite cafe and describe people's appearances. Describe their clothes, gestures, bodies, and, especially, their faces.

      • You can also observe someone's appearance elsewhere (at home, etc.)

      • Feel free to spiral off this topic into musings of your own choice

    • Required reading: "Loss of Face" (reader, 33-44).

      • Note: the article is a bit on the long side, but it's fascinating

Tuesday 3/11: Read Chapter 5 of Writing Fiction, "Fictional Place" (164-78).

Thursday 3/7: Pick ONE of the first five prompts listed on pages 206-207 of Writing Fiction. You can use characters from the story you submitted last week or make up new characters for the exercise you choose. Word count: 600 words. *** POST THIS ASSIGNMENT UNDER "WRITING EXERCISES: 3/13--Setting"

Friday 3/8: Read "Cat's Cradle" in your reader, pp. 116-121 (reader #s). Note how Aciman uses setting as you read the story.
