Assignments for First Four Weeks 9/8-10/5
Week 1:
Tuesday 9/8: Introduction to the course, to one another.
Wednesday 9/9: Note-taking assignment on The White Tiger (see separate instructions). We will use the novel to discuss how to take notes on a literary text.
Thursday 9/10: Writing assignment on The White Tiger: Using Quotations #1. Assignment to be handed out in class on Wednesday, 9/9.
Friday 9/11: Read and take notes (in reader) on “Raymond’s Run.”
Week 2:
Monday, 9/14: Writing assignment on “Raymond’s Run”: Using Quotations #2. To be handed out in class on Friday, 9/11.
Tuesday, 9/15: Read and take notes on "Man of the House."
Wednesday, 9/16: Writing assignment on “Man of the House”: Using Quotations #3. To be handed out in class on Tuesday, 9/15.
Thursday, 9/17: Writing assignment on "Man of the House": Topic Sentences. To be handed out in class on Wednesday, 9/16.
Friday, 9/18: Vocabulary quiz on Chapt. 1 of Vocabulary Energizers. Also, read about nouns in How Grammar Works, pp. 8-12 and do the exercises on pp. 9 & 12; read about pronouns in the pink Grammar Workbook, pp. 5-6. In class we’ll work on pp. 4, 7, & 8 of the Workbook. Bring pink workbook with you to class.
Week 3:
Monday, 9/21: Read and take notes on “Cell One.”
Tuesday, 9/22: Paragraph due on “Cell One.” Topic to be handed out in class on Friday, 9/18.
Wednesday, 9/23: Read and take notes on "On the Rainy River."
Thursday, 9/24: Read and take notes on “This is What It Means to Say 'Phoenix, Arizona.'”
Friday, 9/25: Vocab quiz on Chapt. 2 of Vocabulary Energizers. Also, read about verbs in the pink Grammar Workbook, pp. 9-12. We’ll do exercises on pp. 13-15 in class. Bring both grammar books with you.
Week 4:
Monday, 9/28: NO SCHOOL!
Tuesday, 9/29: No homework. Bring reader to class. Work on essay on "Phoenix, Arizona."
Wednesday, 9/30: Bring in completed draft of thesis and paragraphs on "Phoenix."
Thursday, 10/1: Essay on "Phoenix, Arizona" due!
Friday, 10/2: Vocab quiz on Chapt. 3 of Vocabulary Energizers; read about adjectives and adverbs in How Grammar Works, pp. 41-45 and 47-53 and do examples on pp. 45 and 53. Bring both grammar books with you.
Always come to class with your 3-ring English binder. In the binder should go: assignment sheets, especially the current one; blank college-ruled paper for note taking and in-class writing; all handouts distributed in class; and all completed or in-progress work.
Bring pencils, pens, and paper as well at the appropriate text(s) to class.
And bring yourself: prompt, awake and alert, ready to do the work of the course.
