Week Eight: Point of View

Mon 3/24--No homework!

Tues 3/25--Read Writing Fiction, "Call Me Ishmael: Point of View," pp. 300-316.

Thurs 3/27--There are three parts to Thursday's assignment, but none of them are super long:

    • Read "Invasion from Outer Space" (reader, 133-135).

    • Also, read "Orientation" under "Handouts" in the sidebar of your period's website.

      • Think about POV in both stories. Which do you find more interesting/effective? Why

    • Please fill out the worksheet attached below and paste it with your answers into your journal.

      • Worksheet wordcount: no min or max.

Fri 3/28--Journal entry:

    • Required topic: Review the answers you put in your journal entry for Thursday and come up with three short pitches for stories

      • Your pitches should be no longer than 50 words

        • Your pitch should include:

          • the name of the main character

          • the setting

          • the character's motivation/desire

          • the conflict (what's preventing the character from getting what s/he/they want)

        • Think action verbs rather than linking verbs

        • Have clear, vivid subjects for these verbs

    • Total count: 150 words

  • Remaining 200 words: your choice!

  • Help coming up with pitches:

      • Now, look at your list and see if you can take one or two of these people—fictionalize them in some way—and/or one setting and/or one theme and/or plot —and make a story out of it…

      • Or you could just take two of these people and put them into dialogue or a scene or some sort of conflict with one another…
