Week 8
M 10/10—L Writing Workshop Day #1
Read through the personal essay topics
Pick 1-3 topics from the list or your own topics
Freewrite on the topic/s you have chosen
You can break this up into sections--freewriting a little on each topic to see which you might like best.
Or just freewrite on one topic, if you prefer.
Post your freewrite on Canvas
Word count: 500 words minimum
Remember:
A freewrite means
quickly--keep your fingers moving
you don't delete/edit/stop to fix grammar/spelling etc
you go for the jugular
write down whatever comes to mind, no matter how strange/unpleasant
you might veer off topic--let your mind go where it wants to
Writing is thinking--don't edit as you think!
Assignment should take no more than 40-50 minutes
W 10/12 NO CLASSES
Th 10/13—L Writing Workshop Day #2
Read the Paul Auster personal essay "Why I Write"
Post a freewrite on one or more than one of the following topics on Canvas:
A sketch of the setting for your essay
A sketch of an important person in your essay
A sketch of a scene for your essay (including dialogue)
Try to include concrete (sensory) details in your freewrite
In other words, try to think of a way of narrowing down your topic by picking a moment in time that's representative of the relationship or larger situation you're exploring in the essay
Word count: 500 words minimum (you can always write more)
