Week 13: Revision

Note: make sure to bring your computers with you to class; if we have time, I'd like you to do some revision exercises in class with your short stories.

Monday 4/17--Read "Revision" in Writing Fiction, 316-329 and 333-338.

Tuesday 4/18--Read "Cariboo Cafe" by Helena Viramontes (see attached PDF).

    • Note: Helena Viramontes will likely be able to come to class period 3 and talk about the story and writing more generally. If you're in period 4 and can switch around to come to period 3 that day, please do!

      • Period 3: prepare a series of questions to ask Viramontes about the story and about the writing process in general.

    • Period 4: make sure you have your computer and one of your stories ready for revising!

Thursday 4/20--Read "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" in reader, 105-115.

Friday 4/21--Look at the original version of the story and compare with the edited version:

    • Compare the edited version with the original version of "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love": Carver story--before LIsch edits

      • Please note some of the key differences between the stories.

      • Also, for those who are interested, click here to check out some letters that Carver wrote to Lish regarding their relationship.

    • Also read "Revisioning the Great Gatsby" in your reader: 47-57.

      • Think about what makes for a great writer-editor relationship.

    • Here's the original version of "What We Talk About" without the editorial comments:
