Thursday, 2/6 – Twelfth Night: Act I, scenes 4 & 5--ONLY READ UP UNTIL PAGE 35 ("Enter Maria")!
Friday, 2/7 – Vocab Quiz on Chapter 1 of VEII (the green one); read about
participles in HGW, pp. 130 -132 and Workbook, p. 51 and do exercises on p. 52.
Week 2
Monday, 2/10—Twelfth Night: Finish Act I and read Act II, scenes 1 & 2.
Revision due:
Re-read your in-class poetry analysis
Re-read my comments (both the ones in the margin and the end comments)
Revise one paragraph of your poetry in-class essay
Post the old and new versions of the paragraph on your homework website (label them clearly)
Note: please put the date FIRST in the title bar of your post (and do so for all future posts).
E.g. "2/10--Revision of Poetry Analysis"
If you do not do so, you won't get credit for the assignment.

Friday, 3/14— Writing assignment:
Step 1: Find, re-read, and mark-up passages describing:
Daisy and Tom Buchanan's house
AND
Gatsby's house
Step 2: Write a thesis statement in which you articulate a significant difference between the two residences.
Step 3: Pick at least TWO quotations from the novel, write them out, and analyze them in support of your thesis.
Word count: 300 words (not including quotations)

1. Passage analysis: Analyze ONE key passage (no longer than a paragraph) from Chapter 5. Pick at least THREE key words from the passage and suggest what these words say about Gatsby and/or an important theme of the novel.
Please write out your passage and THEN write out your analysis

2. Creative assignment: write a journal entry from either Gatsby's or Daisy's perspective about the moment they spent together in the "white roadster by the curb" (74) back in October of 1917. What made the moment so magical for the character you chose? What does your character see in the other one? Why are they so much in love?
Word count for either choice: 300 words.
Please label your assignment as follows: "3/19--Gatsby Chapter 5 Assignment"

You can write a little on all five topics or pick two to focus on.

Tuesday, 4/1—Please post this on your homework site and title it: "4/1--Passage Analysis"
Find THREE rich, meaty quotations that you feel relate to a topic you're interested in.
Analyze each quotation, selecting out specific words to investigate and explore in detail.

Come up with a working thesis for your essay based on these quotation analyses.

Wednesday, 4/2— Please post this on your homework site and title it: "4/2--Intro Para and Outline"
Post the introductory paragraph of your essay.
Make sure the last sentence of the intro is your working thesis
Make an outline of the body paragraphs and conclusion
Outline should include:
Topic sentences
Quotations
If making an outline doesn't work for you, then feel free to do an additional freewrite (300 words) or something comparable to the work involved in an outline
Thursday, 4/3—Write complete draft of the essay (intro, body paras, and conclusion) and bring it to class on a word or pages document.
Friday, 4/4— At-home essay on Gatsby due.
Tonight:
Please do the "highlighting" exercise on the next-to-final draft of your essay
Highlight the thesis in one color
Highlight the topic sentences in another color
Highlight the textual evidence in a third color
Highlight the analysis of your textual evidence in a fourth color
Make changes to the essay if you notice problems with any of the above
Review the checklist, fix errors, and check off the boxes
Note: I will take off points for any uncorrected typos or mechanical errors
Bring in both the "highlighted" draft and the final draft (no highlighting) to class tomorrow
You will post your final draft on turnitin.com during class time
