      • Don't spend hours--just make sure you know what is and is not a preposition.

  • Bring pink workbook to class.

  • There will be a short quiz at the beginning of class to make sure you've done the readings

    • Also, review nouns, pronouns and verbs--these will also be on the quiz

    • Don't stress about the quiz--you just have to show me that you've done the readings thoroughly--you don't have to have perfect comprehension of the grammar!

Fri 9/15 (S): Read and take notes on "On the Rainy River” (short story READER).

Mon 9/18 (S): Writing assignment on “On the Rainy River"

Weds 9/20:

  • If you're feeling a bit shaky on your parts of speech, I'd strongly suggest you go to the Writing Workshop during CC to get help with grammar.

  • You can also always make an individual appointment with a writing coach:

Thurs 9/21/Fri 9/22 (L): Grammar review

      • Note: For extra grammar practice, click here. Note that the first part of this sheet is the same as one of the above, but there's a new exercise on the second sheet (with answers on the third page).

  • Please note that I've moved the grammar test to Weds/Thurs

Weds 9/27, Thurs 9/28 (L): Grammar test on parts of speech

      • If you're feeling a bit shaky on your parts of speech, I'd strongly suggest you go to the Writing Workshop on Weds during CC to get help with grammar.

      • You can also always make an individual appointment with a writing coach:

Fri 9/29 (S): Re-read/review “The Red Convertible," thinking about the following question:

      • "Why does Lyman release the car into the river?"

        • Please don't discuss your answer with other students.

      • Please do a 300-word freewrite on "The Red Convertible" that you'll post on Canvas

        • By "freewrite," I mean just jot down ideas about the question without worrying about grammar, spelling, etc. The goal is to write quickly and fluidly--just "vomit" ideas out onto the screen.

        • Don't use bullet points; write in sentences (but the sentences don't have to be good)

        • You can use dictation software if you'd like to experiment

      • Time for assignment: 30-40 minutes (no more!)

Mon 10/2 (S): Writing workshop #2 on "The Red Convertible"

  • Link to the assignment is HERE

Weds 10/4: (L) Writing assignment on "The Red Convertible" due

Thurs 10/5, Fri 10/6: (L) Begin The Odyssey

  • Please look at the beginning of Book 1, but don't feel you have to read more than a couple pages. I intend for this homework assignment to be light. You'll finish reading Book 1 next Monday.

  • Please bring the book to class.
