Weeks 1-4: Poetry

Week 1

Tues 1/14--S: Review midterm

W 1/15, Th 1/16--L:

    • Introduction to Poetry; read "Base Details" (5)

  • Do homework in the poetry reader (write in your reader or on a separate page if you prefer)

    • Helpful instructions for reading and marking up poems are here (thanks to Dr. P for writing these up!)

Fri 1/17--S: Read and annotate (to the best of your ability): “First Death in Nova Scotia” (6)

  • Please answer the questions at the bottom of the page and put your answers here on Canvas (link not yet active)

      • word count minimum: 200 words

    • NOTE: writing assignment has been canceled

    • Also, read/review the list of poetic devices in your poetry reader (p. 1a and 1b)

Week 2

Mon 1/20--NO SCHOOL

Tu 1/21 or W 1/22--L:

    • Review the poetry terms on pages 1a,1b, and 2 of your green poetry reader (don't worry if you don't understand them completely)

    • Read and annotate "Mrs. Small" (p. 8 in reader)

    • Note: the writing exercise on "Mrs. Small" has been canceled

Th 1/23 or Fri 1/24--L: Read and annotate:

    • "My Papa's Waltz" (p. 12 in reader)

    • Assignment on Canvas here: Loud Words on "Papa" (link is now active)

Note: As always, assignments might change so try not to get too far ahead!

Week 3

Mon 1/27 S--Read and annotate "Traveling through the Dark" (p. 21 of reader)

    • Also, answer the questions below the poem here on Canvas (link is now active)

    • Word count minimum: 350 words

Tues 1/28--CPS DAY

Weds 1/29 or Thurs 1/30 L--

    • Please review poetic devices in your reader

  • Refer to my tips for writing an in-class essay on poetry here:poetry tips

    • Practice in-class essay at sight

    • In-class essay topic on Canvas here (link is now active)

      • Note: don't open this till you're ready to read the poem and write on it for 40 minutes

      • Try to simulate actual test conditions (e.g. time yourself, write in a quiet place)

      • Have your reader and a pencil ready (the poem will be from the reader)

      • Pass/fail assignment

Fri 1/31--

    • Please read and mark up "The River Merchant's Wife: A Letter" on p. 30 of your reader

    • Please review the sample essays on "The Crabs"

      • They're posted on Google Classroom under "Sample Essays"

Week 4

M 2/3--S--Poetry In-class Essay #1

Tues 2/4 or W 2/5 L--Read and annotate "Ozymandias" on p. 26 of your reader.

Weds: Optional but highly recommended: Common classroom on analyzing poetry/writing about poetry

Thurs 2/6 or Fri 2/7 L--Practice essay #2

    • Practice in-class essay at sight

              • allusion

              • irony

              • form (sonnet)

              • iambic pentameter

  • Pick other poems from the reader or elsewhere to read and write on for practice

  • Read the sample essay on "The Colonel" on Canvas (please note: this is a different place from where I've posted other sample essays)

Weds 2/12: Common classroom on grammar. This is a perfect time to start reviewing the old grammar as we learn new stuff for the test coming up on 2/20 (Block F) and 2/21 (Block C).
