Weeks 12 and 13: 4/11-4/22

Mon 4/11-Writing assignment on Gatsby Chapt. 5 (not for a grade--only spend 40 minutes!)

Choose ONE of the following options:

1. Passage analysis: Analyze ONE key passage (no longer than a paragraph) from Chapter 5. Pick at least THREE key words from the passage and suggest what these words say about Gatsby and/or an important theme of the novel.

    • Please write out your passage and THEN write out your analysis

    • Passage does not count towards your word count

    • Suggested passages

2. Creative assignment: write a journal entry from either Gatsby's or Daisy's perspective about the moment they spent together in the "white roadster by the curb" (74) back in October of 1917. What made the moment so magical for the character you chose? What does your character see in the other one? Why are they so much in love?

Word count for either choice: 300 words.

Tues 4/12--Read Chapter 6 of The Great Gatsby

Weds 4/13--No new reading--just look over the last two pages of chapter six.

  • Think about loud words and significant phrases/ideas/themes that come up on pages 110 and 111.

Thurs 4/14--Read Chapter 7 of The Great Gatsby (stop at bottom of 129--". . . self-control.")

Fri 4/15--Vocab quiz on VEII, Chapter 8. Also, do examples on pronoun case in pink workbook, pp. 80-81.

Mon 4/18--Finish Chapter 7 of The Great Gatsby

Tues 4/19--Read Chapter 8 of The Great Gatsby.

Weds 4/20--Read Chapter 9 of The Great Gatsby.

Thurs 4/21-Practice in-class essay work.

    • Follow the instructions and do two of the following four passages to practice.

Fri 4/22--In-class passage analyses on Gatsby.

    • To prepare, you might

      • Do more practice passages from the homework sheet

      • Look for rich/important passages in the novel and link them to the novel's key themes.

    • If helpful, read the sample essay on 12th Night for an example of how to do close readings of words and phrases.

      • Note, of course, that tomorrow you'll be writing two passage analyses, not an in-class essay.
