Week Three: Showing and Telling

Reminder: I sometimes change or modify assignments, based on what happens in class, so keep that in mind if you get ahead in the assignments.

Mon 1/28 (S): Read Chapter 2 of Writing Fiction, "Seeing Is Believing," pp. 21-42 (you can skip the stories).

    • Journal Entry #3

      • Required topic:

        • Write about noises you wish you've never heard or tastes you wish you never experienced. Use as much sensory detail as possible when describing these auditory and taste experiences.

        • AND/OR:

          • Lie down wherever you are (carpet, cement, grass, etc.) and describe the textures you feel beneath you. Again, use as much sensory detail as possible.

    • Word count minimum: 350 words (short!)

    • Again, time yourself and write the time the journal entry took you at the bottom of the entry

    • Post here

Tues 1/29: CPS Day

Weds 1/30 or Thurs 1/31 (L):

    • Assignment posted on Canvas--"Textures and Tastes."

    • Look under "Discussion" on Canvas.

      • NOTE: this assignment will be shared and seen by your classmates (it's not a freewrite per se)

Friday 2/1 (S): English PD day

    • Read through your journal entries, freewrites, and exercises for the class (you can also look at older journal entries and relevant notes/ideas you've written down before this semester)

    • Post FIVE possible ideas for a story

    • THEN, do a freewrite on one or more of these ideas in your journal.

      • Remember to follow Goldberg's guidelines for a freewrite.

        • Keep fingers moving; don't worry about grammar, punctuation, etc.; go for the jugular, etc.

    • As always, please time your freewrite and put the time it took at the beginning or end of your freewrite.

    • Post ideas and freewrite here: Canvas link is here

    • Total word count (for prompts and freewrite combined): 500 words or more
