Week 13: Openings, Conclusions, and Revision

Mon 4/18--Please post your favorite opening line on Canvas, under "Discussions."

    • Make sure to post in the correct section.

Also:

  • Please read the following plot summary of The Long Goodbye: Long Goodbye Plot Summary (we'll be talking about the novel's ending in class so I want you to have a sense of what happens in the novel. Be warned: it's a very complicated--and somewhat ridiculous--plot!)

        • Also, read the attached pages on conclusions. Think about how you'd answer the questions posed in section 2 (page 88 on the PDF).

Tues 4/19--Read "A Christmas Miracle" at the end of your reader (note: we'll stick with this story for Tuesday and do the other story later...)

    • What makes the intro and the conclusion successful?

      • Or, if you don't like them, why do they fail for you? What would you suggest instead?

Thurs 4/21--Read "Revision" in Writing Fiction, 316-329 and 333-338.

Fri 4/22--Read "Hanwell in Hell" in your reader.

    • As with "A Christmas Miracle," ask yourself:

      • What makes the intro and conclusion successful?

      • Or, if you don't like them, why do they fail? What would you suggest instead?
