Tu 11/1—S: No homework. In class, we will review parts of speech and discuss subjects and verbs
Th 11/3—L: Read and take notes on Odyssey, Bk 12
Fr 11/4—S: In-class essay on Book 12.

For homework, please do a freewrite or a practice essay on the following question:
What meaningful connections can you make between the various encounters Od describes in Book 12?

Week 12
Tu 11/8—L: Read Odyssey, Bk 13. Also, read the summary of Books 14-17.
Optional notes on Bk 13 (b/c you have extra reading for today, I'm not requiring note-taking on this book)
Grammar
Read about direct objects and indirect objects in How Grammar Works (28-30 and 121).
Bring pink workbook to class.
On Monday night, please read (but do not change) your two essays
If you're undecided as to which one is better (keeping in mind clarity and good mechanics), choose the essay with
the stronger thesis
more interesting ideas
better quotation use
You can let classmates look over the two essays and give you their feedback
OR: an excellent topic to consult with a writing coach on!
If you decide early, please email me and let me know your choice so I can start reading and giving feedback on the essays starting Monday

As you read this book, think about how you end cycles of violence.
Is the end of The Odyssey a satisfying one: why or why not?

For homework, please do one of the following:
Do a 300 word freewrite on possible ideas and themes your segment will explore
If you already know your idea and theme, then, instead, you can begin work on your segment and/or translator's note

Note that "simple predicate" means the main verb of the sentence.

Tu 12/13--L: Review for midterm
On Canvas here, please do the following:
Pick two passages from The Odyssey (you can use your classmates' passages from Thursday's assignment if you wish) that are thematically related.
Make sure you say where in The Odyssey these passages are from and give page numbers.
Write a semi-formal freewrite in which you compare or contrast the passages above.
Identify an important idea or value or theme that the two passages share
Explain how each passage develops that idea
Analyze closely by explaining the significance of specific words, phrases, and images
Word count for freewrite: 300 words minimum
