Week Twelve: Conclusions and Revision

Monday 4/29--Journal Entry, 975 words. Read the plot summary of The Long Goodbye here.

    • Optional topics for journal:

      • Outline a novel/write opening of novel

      • Describe a favorite food

      • Earth Day-related topic

      • Describe a lunchtime conversation with someone you want to meet.

      • Use a famous opening and freewrite from it

      • Open to a random page in a book, pick a line, then freewrite from it

Tuesday 4/30--Read "Revision" in Writing Fiction, 340-353 AND contribute 5 sentences to the collaborative story.

Bear in mind the following:

1) Avoid the "it was a dream" ending.

2) Say "yes" to what came before in the story. In other words, take the bid.

3) Bear in mind our discussion today as you write your ending. What makes for a satisfying conclusion?

4) Write at least FIVE sentences.

Thursday 5/2--

    • Please read all the prompts on pp. 394-396 of Writing Fiction.

    • Then pick ONE of them to do for homework.

    • Post it in your journal.

    • Minimum word count: 600 words.

Friday 5/3--Read "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" in reader, 105-115.

    • How would you characterize the style and feel of this story?

    • Bring a paper copy of the story you wish to revise to class.
