Weeks Sixteen and Seventeen

Week 16

Mon., 1/2—School closed.

For Tues., 1/3—Writing workshop day (no homework).

For Thurs., 1/5—Writing workshop. For homework, read the essay attached below ("Cooking up a Storey"). Also, write a scene that may or may not be based on your personal essay. Please post in your personal website under "journal entries." 300 words.

Make sure your scene includes the following elements:

  • happens in "real time"

  • uses dialogue

  • has conflict

  • has a setting

  • has high stakes

  • some sort of change occurs by the end of the scene

  • employs as many of the senses as possible.

For Fri., 1/6—Revision of personal essay due.

Note: please post your revision on turnitin.com

Please put your answers to the following questions at the end of your revision:

1) What elements of your original essay did you change?

2) What was the biggest challenge you faced in revising your essay?

3) What aspect of your revision are you proudest of?

4) (new question) How long did the revision take you?

Week 17

For Mon., 1/9—Revise one paragraph of your last in-class analytical essay (or your first, if you prefer) and post as a journal entry. Also, please post the original paragraph so I can see the changes you made to it.

In addition, please answer the following questions in your journal:

    • What aspect of this essay are you proudest of? (Feel free to name more than one).

    • What aspect of this essay could be improved?

    • Any questions for Julie?

    • How long did this essay take? Did you have enough time, need more, or was the time just about right?

For Tues., 1/10—Midterm study sheet now posted on period website!

  • Also, Please come up with ONE good essay question that covers three or more of the works we've read this semester. THEN, write on it OR on another classmate's question. Please post under "Midterm Review: Questions/Responses" on your class period's website. 350 words.

For Thurs., 1/12—Critique of essays. Please look on class website (period 3 or 5) under "Essays for Critique" for the essays to read and comment upon. Print out copies of the essays (with your comments) to bring to class. Note: this homework assignment cannot be dropped.
