The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essay in the IB Diploma Programme accounts for 67% of a student’s overall TOK grade. Its purpose is to evaluate how knowledge is constructed and understood across various Areas of Knowledge (AOKs), which are disciplines including History, The Arts, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Human Sciences. Each year, the IB releases six essay titles that require students in the program to analyse core knowledge questions. Understanding these prompts and how to pair them with one’s selected AOKs (if they are not provided) is key for the creation of a high scoring essay.
Essay Titles:
Do we gain a better appreciation of the human experience from the artist or the historian? Discuss with reference to the arts and history.
If values change over time, how can they, nevertheless, continue to guide the pursuit of knowledge? Discuss with reference to two areas of knowledge.
In the production of knowledge, how can knowledge be reliable if it is built on assumptions? Discuss with reference to the human sciences and one other area of knowledge.
To what extent do you agree with the claim that “any coincidence is worth noticing; you can throw it away later if it is only a coincidence” (Agatha Christie). Answer with reference to mathematics and one other area of knowledge.
In the production of knowledge, when choosing one explanation over another, to what extent should simplicity be prioritized? Discuss with reference to two areas of knowledge.
In the pursuit of knowledge, what value is there in exploring the paradoxical or the counterintuitive? Discuss with reference to the natural sciences and one other area of knowledge.
With this year’s prompts, netizen discussion, and polls suggest that there is little variation in title selection. Title 1, which asks whether we gain a better appreciation of the human experience from the artist or the historian, is considered to be the most popular choice because it has provided the two AOKs (the arts and history), which thereby removes the need of finding complementary fields. Moreover, title 4 is predicted to be the least popular prompt because it relies on a quotation by Agatha Christie and explicitly mandates a reference to Mathematics, which is an AOK that many students find hard to explore epistemologically. The remaining prompts include theoretical concepts like shifting values, foundational assumptions, simplicity, and paradoxical phenomena across various open and required AOK pairings.
Selecting the right prompt depends on your personal academic strengths and the arguments you wish to explore. For title 1, an effective approach can involve contrasting the subjectivity of the arts with evidence-based History. For Title 2, I would choose to pair ethics with natural sciences - this can allow for an exploration into how ever adapting moral standards can shape boundaries, whilst epistemic values preserve integrity. Title 3 can be done using human sciences (given) and mathematics to examine how models on behavioral or axiomatic assumptions can still yield valid/reliable conclusions. Title 4 requests one for an analysis of pattern recognition as a rule of thumb (heuristic tool) in mathematics and natural sciences, weighed against the danger of false correlations. For Title 5, one could use a comparison between the law of parsimony in the natural sciences and the risks of oversimplification in History. Finally, Title 6 provides a foundation for examining how counterintuitive phenomena can drive shifts in the natural sciences and expand awareness through paradoxical works in the arts. Each of these prompts are unique and can achieve the highest grades, so choose one that you truly like! I personally, as someone who is interested in STEM, would choose between Title 6 and 2, as both can allow for a connection to the Natural Sciences.

Fact: TOK has been around since the start - 1968 - as a part of the original pilot program.
