Importance of Voting
The Canadian Federal election is approaching on April 28, 2025, and as candidates start promoting their campaigns, students should educate themselves about the parties involved. The federal candidates affect every one of us, as they are responsible for foreign policies and interprovincial trade. As a student, you will eventually get your opportunity to vote, and it’s important to learn about their values and goals. It's important to be avid voters in the future as the voter turnout was only 62.6% on September 20, 2021. Every vote matters and it’s essential to educate yourself early.
How it's going to run
There will be voter privacy booths set up in the cafeteria by the steps to the grad lounge. We will hand out slips for you to mark your vote. Once you’ve found an empty station, cast your vote and make sure to bring the slip and hand it directly to one of the facilitators. Once the facilitator has signed and put your vote into the box you can leave and enjoy the rest of your day. Soon the votes will be out and you’ll see how your chosen candidate did. Reminder, keep your vote to yourself while around the station and be sure to encourage your friends to vote for themselves and what they think is the best candidate for their values.
What's your role?
Research has shown that young people are less likely to vote than the general Canadian population. Elections in Canada want to make it accessible for youth and students to participate in the electoral process. One of the ways you can participate is by taking part in the CIVIX student vote on April 23-25 at lunch in the cafeteria. It’s important to educate yourself about the candidates before the vote, so make sure you learn a bit through our posters or their campaign page.
