Our annual Service as Action Week just took place from Monday, May 15th until Thursday, May 18th. This year, the Community Service Committee raised awareness and supported a local organization called Youth Rising Above. Youth Rising Above became a charitable organization only six years ago and works with marginalized youth by planning dynamic programs which focus on building resilience, leadership, and personal wellbeing. York mainly raised money for a summer leadership camp for youth that is taking place in August.
On Monday students attended a Lunch and Learn with the founder of Youth Rising Above Jonathan John. Here you can find a summary of what we learned about the organization.
Throughout the week our Community Service Committee ran fundraising activities such as a Smoothie Morning, Karaoke, and a Bake Sale that lasted through breakfast and lunch. Students also received Google Forms where they can donate using their student accounts to see teachers sing karaoke and to pie a teacher in the face. Towards the end of the week we had far surpassed our goal of $1000 and we will reveal the final amount next week.
Continuing next week we will still be collecting unused school supplies such as: pencil cases, water bottles, lunch boxes, pencils, markers, pens, erasers, binders, folders, glue sticks, and highlighters. School supply donations will be collected from Monday, May 5th to Thursday, May 25th as part of a House Challenge to earn House points.
Thank you York for living our Community Service Committee’s motto, “Take a stand and lend a hand.”
