Many students notice in the first week of the DP program that the number of tests and amount of homework increases dramatically. Some students may become stressed and can begin to feel anxious. From first-hand experience, there are strategies that can help you cope with the increased workload and be successful.
First, it is crucial to stay organized. It is imperative to have a proper organizational system for each subject. For me, I like to have a small binder per subject and after the unit is completed, I transfer my notes into a larger subject binder.
Also, I keep a small pocket in each binder for loose papers that aren’t hole punched. These notes will not only be useful for this year, but for your Year 2 exam at the end of grade 12, so you cannot LOSE them!
Second, complete your homework on time! Some of you might believe that finishing homework each day is a waste. Trust me, don’t underestimate the value of completing your homework daily. This is important because it will ensure that you understand all the concepts well in advance of your unit tests. Time goes by quickly in the DP program, and before you know it, you have finished all of the content and are writing a unit test. This small step goes a long way to helping you be successful.
Third, work on your assignments or study in advance. You never know what other work you will need to do last minute before an assignment is due or you have a test. Plan and prepare for the unexpected! Also, when you study ahead, you have the ability to ask clarification questions and go over difficult concepts. If you go to extra help the day before a test or assignment is due, there might be a high volume of students during that time. This means you might not be able to get your questions answered and won’t be as prepared.
Last, always confirm a concept with your teacher if you’re unsure about it. You never know if that concept will be a “key” concept on a test or assignment. Getting extended explanations from your teachers can be helpful and improve the quality of your work. Also, this will help you tackle more difficult test questions that require application to unknown scenarios.
The first term of the DP program can be difficult, overwhelming and a hard adjustment. Once you find strategies that work for you, this will allow you to become successful.
This is only one perspective; there are many other strategies that might work for you. Remember, don’t give up and stay positive. Hope these strategies help. Have a great first term!
