NEW CIRCLES CLOTHING DRIVE
As the days become shorter, the rain becomes snow, and you can feel the cold wind brushing against your face every morning. Students are starting to come to school wearing thick jackets, hats, and gloves. Unfortunately, not all people in Toronto have access to the simple things that we take for granted during the winter months. Because of this, the Community Service Committee and Eco Team are so excited to reprise our annual New Circles Clothing Drive!
For some background information, New Circles is the largest clothing bank in Toronto. They are a non-profit organization that works to provide assistance and necessities to those living in poverty. It was created by Cindy Blakely, the grandmother of York students Robbie, Charlie, and Ridley Kozman. Blakely believes that all citizens have a right to access food, water, clothing, and shelter.
From December 1st to 15th, our York community will be helping out by donating clothing for people that can’t afford new clothing, including new immigrants, refugees, and homeless people, in particular youth.
Additionally, New Circles’ work is helping the environment too, hence the partnership with the Eco Team. By collecting donations of old clothing, we are helping to eliminate the 10 million tonnes of textile waste in North America every year.
Additionally, the New Circles Clothing Drive is a house challenge! Every team will have a box to put clothing donations in, and at the end of the initiative, the house that donates the most will win the most points for their house. The Middle School boxes are on the 4th floor and the Senior School boxes are in the following places:
Blue House: Outside of the science rooms on the 2nd floor
Yellow House: Outside of the Art Room 3rd floor
Red House: By the Grad stair seats on the 2nd floor
Green House: Learning Commons on the 1st floor
Thank you all for your support in advance! Take a stand, lend a hand!
