Hey York, it’s fur coat season!
For those who are confused, it means it is the season of getting out our fur coats to keep us warm in this cold winter weather.
It’s the season of looking super chic, but there are some things to consider when picking out your new coat.
Wearing real fur can be controversial. The reason for this is that real fur coats are connected to animal cruelty or dismissal of animal rights, essentially killing furry animals to get their fur just for the purpose of fashion.
We shouldn’t buy from companies that sell brand new real fur coats, as we don’t want to encourage them to further their production. However, if you REALLY want a real fur coat, a more ethical option would be to buy it from a thrift store i.e get a fur coat that has been made years ago and already worn for a long time.
Most people reach for faux fur coats, meaning fake fur coats. This has been seen as more ethical because animals aren’t being harmed. The coats are essentially made in factories out of synthetic fibres. Although it is fake fur, it can look almost identical to real fur. Of course that depends on how much you pay for it.
Real fur coats usually cost more than fake fur coats, as real fur coats are more expensive to produce, while fake fur coats are cheaper to produce. You can buy fake fur coats for a more affordable price from fast fashion brands such as Zara, Abercromie and Fitch, H&M…the list goes on. However, we can ask ourselves “How ethical is buying from these brands?”.
Well York…. that's a topic for another article…
