Mr. Hamilton has some important reminders and updates for you regarding York's exam code of conduct, summer uniform policy and upcoming grade 12 events, including details about the seniors' graduation ceremony (and luncheon to follow on the turf), as well as the ceremony rehearsal.
Along with closing ceremonies being held in the gym for both our Middle and Senior schools, there will also be a livestream option available to see these final culminating events of the school year for those who register. Ms. Gopal and Mr. Sean Rand, a member of our Junior School faculty, share a final update on our DEI progress in partnership with Equity Connections, including June workshops and an equity challenge. As DEI chairs, they have been instrumental in making York a more inclusive and supportive place for all. We thank them for all their hard work this year.
Due to scheduling challenges, the Global Pathways School in Chettipalayam, India is at this time unable to host York for our traditional March Break trip during the 2023-2024 school year. However, we are thrilled to introduce a new and exciting trip to Bhutan with ALIVE Outdoors for March Break 2024. This trip will be open to a group of Grade 11 and 12 students.
Our annual SAA week just took place with the Community Service Committee raising awareness for and supporting the organization Youth Rising Above. Throughout the week there were many fundraising events such as a smoothie morning and karaoke. Last week, after a four year hiatus, York's grade 6 to 10s were once again able to take part in Challenge Week! Students travelled to different locations throughout Canada and the whole of North America. From Middle School trips to Ottawa, Quebec City and Montreal to fun times in New Orleans and British Columbia, there was so much to see, learn and enjoy.

The Eco Team is excited to announce an initiative for all students in the Middle and Senior School! On April 21, they are looking forward to hosting a community clean-up during the York School's Eco Week. The event will take place over lunch and those who participate will get 1 volunteer hour! This year’s Pride Week was a collaboration by our GSA, Student Council and Equity Committee. We were thrilled to have many events throughout the week to celebrate the contributions of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, recognize the hardships they continue to experience and to learn more about allyship, inclusion, kindness, courage, and acceptance.

Taking place during the week of April 17 to 20, during every lunchtime in the cafeteria, there will be a table near the citizenship office with clothes and accessories where you can take part.

From our annual Grade 7 Public Speaking Competition to leadership opportunities that we know they'll shine in, you can expect to hear much more about the Middle School in future editions!

York is excited to continue its partnership with the Village Community Foundation to raise funds to send Global Pathways School (GPS) students to summer camp in Tamil Nadu, India! The Grade 11 & 12 students participating in our Cultural Exchange Trip are busy preparing for this fundraising day.
Similar to last year, as part of our commitment to continuous learning through the lens of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the school will be hosting student and staff focus groups to amplify voices from our community. Our partners in this work, Equity Connections, will facilitate these on Thursday, January 26th.
Lunar New Year will be celebrated this year on Sunday, January 22nd. To celebrate we will be having a Red Casual Day on Friday of next week and that morning in front of reception, the Mandarin club will be serving green tea and another extra special treat. As the days become shorter, the rain becomes snow, and you can feel the cold wind brushing against your face every morning. Students are starting to come to school wearing thick jackets, hats, and gloves. Unfortunately, not all people in Toronto have access to the simple things that we take for granted during the winter months.

While you may have already had the chance to take a look at our Community Column article entitled "Movember", this new post will highlight the Student Council's citizenship initiatives for the month of November, which centres around promoting and raising awareness about the Movember organization at York.
We are so excited to dress up in our costumes on Monday and show them off at our Halloween Costume Catwalk Assembly! We do need to ensure our costumes are appropriate for the school environment and respectful of others, their cultures and religions, avoiding cultural appropriation.
Last Thursday, York's Citizenship Team hosted Homecoming on the turf after an amazing varsity girls basketball game against Greenwood. What a game! We were relieved that York was able to win big, especially after the lunchtime pep rally, where our student athletes were recognized and cheered on.
The Community Service Committee is here to remind you that fall is here, meaning the York Scares Hunger Food Drive is right around the corner. Don’t forget to bring in your items starting October 17th! Whichever grade brings in the most items gets points attributed to them in colour clash, getting you closer to a grade wide prize! It’s a win, win!
Friday marked York's annual Orange Shirt Day and Truth & Reconciliation Assembly. Students were invited to wear orange shirts, which reenacts the orange shirt that Phyllis Webstad had taken from her when she attended a residential school. We also had the opportunity to hear from Indigenous voices who helped explain the importance of the call to reconciliation.
Students in grade 11 and 12 are invited to consider applying to be a student presenter at the Thrive Conference through the attached Google Form in this post (also found in Week Ahead). This event will take place on November 21st, with the planning day taking place on October 14th.

Two weeks ago the entire Senior School started off the year reconnecting, strengthening community and having loads of fun at Camp Timberlane. We thought it would be a good idea to revisit our time at camp with some photos taken by one of our very own Grade 12 students!
In honour of the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation, Ms. Larcina has prepared a list of fiction and nonfiction titles that teach us about the history of Indigenous Peoples in North America, of residential schools and their negative impact on survivors and victims, and other stories from Indigenous creators.
