March break. It’s too cold to go outside, too boring inside and let me guess - all your friends have gone on vacation but you’re stuck at home? It can be so tedious scrolling through all the repetitive lists of indoor activities. They all say the same thing - scavenger hunt, puzzles, reading, new hobbies, spring cleaning. It’s not even spring yet! So here’s a brand new, better list of five original ideas. Enjoy!
Rebind Your Favourite Books
Instead of every other overused arts and crafts trend, why not try something new that will have a positive impact on your bookshelf? You may be thinking that only certified nerds rebind books, but it’s actually a great way to match any novel to your own aesthetic and your room’s colour scheme. All you need is some glue, cardboard, ribbons, fabric, cutting tools and a cutting mat. There are plenty of tutorials online and you can even add your own designs.
Transform Empty Corners/Storage Rooms
If you’re like me and have one tiny storage room in your basement that no one knows what to do with, I would stake a claim to that land now before the rest of your family does. There are so many things to do with that extra space! Some of my personal favourite ideas are a reading nook, gaming room, a quiet space to listen to music or a life-inspo board spanning four walls (half joking). The best part is you can design it with whatever you already have in your house! Happy decorating!
The EPIC Sleepover
My camp friends and I missed the summer when we all shared a cabin, so we started planning our EPIC sleepover. Invite whoever’s in town, if anyone. Here’s what you do: spend as many nights as you want hopping from one group member’s house to the next, doing fun activities around the city and even just inside. There will be no “Sleepover Activity” blog post not completed, no Truth or Dare question unanswered, no 2000s teen movie unwatched. Trust me, it rocks.
Decorate Your Ceiling
Yeah, it sounds weird. But have you ever thought why, in this modern day of sticky tack, not-sticky-enough tape and velcro, we still only decorate walls and floors but not ceilings? I mean, that’s a whole other surface with what on it? Some light? Come on. So here’s what you do - print out a whole bunch of pictures of everything that makes you happy, excited, etc. Don’t tape them up there, because you could rip off some paint, but find some sticky tack in your garage and use that. You can also screw hooks onto your ceiling and hang things there (which is what I do with my extra key chains). What you end up doing is falling asleep with much nicer thoughts and not doom scrolling your way to another exhausting school day.
Shoot a short film
An easy way to spend time with friends is to write and shoot a short film. It doesn’t have to be a cinematic masterpiece or anything like that, just a funny story or skit that you think your friends would want to participate in. The best part is that they don’t even have to act. There are so many parts to making a film like shooting, editing, designing costumes/props/sets and even just entertaining whoever’s not doing anything at that particular moment. Plus, you can always turn it in for your Tech Passion Project like a few of us did.
I hope you found something on this list to keep you entertained for at least a few hours during March break. Have a blast during spirit week and I’ll see you back here for the last twelve weeks of school. Thanks for reading!
