Ok…bear with me…stand on your right leg and bring your left leg off the floor…can you swing it forward? Can you swing it backwards? Can you swing it out to the side? Can you lift it higher? In front of you?
Now do the other leg…is it different?
In the process of “practicing balancing” did you fall? Did you catch yourself? How did you know you were going to fall? How did your body move to come back into balance?
Our physical ability to balance is different everyday and is influenced by many factors that we are aware of and many factors that we are unaware of. What is always true is that we can FEEL when we are out of balance and our bodies instinctively react to bring us back to balance and out of danger.
The same holds true for mental and emotional balance. Unlike the built in instinctive physical reaction that snaps us back into the centre we often disregard or override the feelings that should cue, that mentally and emotionally, we are unstable and unsteady and heading for danger.
Collectively, as a society, we need to remember how to trust our guts! For example, let’s say that you are thinking about adding another “thing” to your plate and you get that tingly feeling that this is going to be “the straw that broke the camel's back” instead of reacting with the standard social response, “it will be fine.”
Take a breath, connect and listen to your body. It KNOWS that this “thing” is going to push you over the edge…it wants to save you from yourself; but, we need to commit to trusting ourselves.
Just like with physical balance the more you practice mental and emotional balance the more easily and less reactively you can bring yourself back into balance and the more stable you become.
