It was 2016, the year of the Rio Olympics, the iPhone 7, and the US Presidential Election. But, the world was united by one record breaking question; where was Will Byers? The July release of the immediate smash hit Stranger Things (Season 1), saw over 16,000,000 views just 7 days after its initial release, and the world was captivated.
Starring actors such as Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, and Winona Ryder (among many other talented cast members), the show portrays the story of a young group of friends in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, 1983. When a member of the group, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) goes mysteriously missing, his friends rally to uncover the circumstances of his disappearance, though, upon finding another stray kid (Millie Bobby Brown), they are left with more questions than answers.
Being between the ages of 12 - 14 by the release of the 1st season, we have seen the young cast of the show through the majority of their life, as they grow to become the adults we know today. With music careers and businesses, not to mention families of their own (what hasn't Millie Bobby Brown done???), the cast we know and love have grown beyond the capacity of the show. But, does that mean they are ready for it to be over?
This week's release of the first installment 5th and final season of Stranger Things brings a plethora of emotions. I, for one, am wildly excited for the conclusion of a saga that has stuck with me for almost half of my lifetime. But, I can’t imagine a world where I’m not complaining about how long the next season is taking, or trying to predict what duo will be my favourite. Despite my reservations, the next season is coming, so on that note, let's get into some predictions
(of course, spoiler warning from here on out)
3: Eleven will need to sacrifice herself in order to conclude the series
I do see the plausibility of this as a choice as Eleven has maintained to be the strongest and most connected (aside from Will) to the upside down, out of the current cast. This choice would have a major emotional impact on the characters of the show and the audience, not to mention would have immense plot implications. Though it might be predictable and, if not carried through properly, lack the proper emotional impact needed for such a dramatic choice
2: Max will be used as Vecna’s next puppet/spy
Not only would this completely change the importance and role of Max’s character in the show, it might also allow for her to develop a further relationship with Will. This is not only a duo we have not much seen, but might provide a perfect confidant for Will, allowing for him to express any struggles he might have been burdened with without being able to divulge in Mike, through their season 4 distance. It might also provide Max with a purpose to be relevant through her incapacitation.
1: Eddie and Vecna’s other victims will return from the dead and come to his aid in some capacity
This is the most believable fan theory I have come across as of yet. In the 3rd season Vecna used characters such as Heather Holloway and her family to gather more people for the creation of the mind flayer, and has been using Will as a spy throughout the show, but especially in season 2. He even used characters such as Chirssy Cunningham and Fred Benson to open up gates to the upside down in season 4. It seems entirely plausible that he would take advantage of them as easy extensions of his hive mind, and to further get inside of the heads of the main cast
Well, suffice to say, I feel very passionately about this show, and cannot wait to finally see how the Duffer brothers have chosen to close out what is only more dear to them. I will miss all of these characters that I have grown up alongside, and only hope to see them grow further beyond Hawkins, to bigger and brighter things.
