Paper Airplane Poetry
I fold the fancy poem
With the precision it deserves
A bolt along the middle
My strikethrough of the words
I force the corners to meet
Like a book or ears of a dog
Or perhaps like long lost lovers
Who lined up parallel all along
If I still smile at the teacher
He won’t notice me crease it close
And as I bend it backwards
My disattention grows
Because poetry is boring
When it is rooted in the why
But who wouldn’t be enthralled
To watch Margeret Atwood fly?
Put a voice to the face: Issue 1
Starting off this year's issues featuring the 2027 graduation class, we have senior and member of the concert band Margo Cholakis.
Margo? Some might ask. I’ve never heard of - oh that girl? Does she even have a voice? I swear she never speaks. See Storms, this is the exact issue Cholakis is bringing to the Stand.
“........” (First quote could not be heard over the air conditioning). “Like that’s just not fair! I’m silenced in a busy reception hall. I ask for a late slip and they give me a grape mint. I mean, I didn’t even know that was a flavour.”
She reports that her soft, frequently described as “whispy” voice can get confused with the autumn breeze. “It’s soothing” her friend says, “like a lullaby. Which is great after Bio, but I keep falling asleep during our conversations.”
Inquiring after her classmates results in speculations like “She’s a real mystery, that girl. Never know what she’s thinking.” or an outright denial that she’s in their class at all.
I’m grateful that in our first issue, we were gifted with such a raw, intimate account of student experience. One less face to be intimidated by in the Grad Lounge.
