The Blue Jays in the World Series, 1/3 of the White House gone, Louvre thieves apprehended, Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau dating, & Max’s favourite sleeper-hit lunch spot — Weekly News Recap
By Max Balzer
This past week — and even just this past weekend — saw a lot happen all around the world, so I’m here to sum it up for you in my first weekly news recap of the 2025-26 school year!
The Blue Jays in the World Series
There are few people in this city — or the world, for that matter — not privy to the triumphant news that the Toronto Blue Jays have stormed back into the World Series after over 32 years away. Their victory in the American League occurred on Monday when George Springer launched a three-run home run to secure a 4-3 win over the Seattle Mariners.
The 2025 World Series kicked off on Friday, with the Blue Jays snagging an impressive 11-4 win over World Series regulars, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Game 2 culminated in 5-1 win for the Dodgers, kicking Monday’s Los Angeles-based Game 3 off with the Series tied.
The Blue Jays will face the Dodgers again Tuesday & Wednesday evening in Los Angeles, before coming home to Toronto as needed for Friday’s Game 6 and Saturday’s Game 7. However, should a team win in Los Angeles over the next three games, the World Series won’t return Toronto for Games 6 or 7.
1/3 of the White House gone
In preparation for the construction of President Donald Trump’s new $350 million ballroom on the east side of the White House, the historic, 123-year-old East Wing of the White House was demolished on Wednesday and Thursday. The Wing previously housed the White House’s screening room, the offices of the First Lady and her staff, and miscellaneous offices like the White House Graphics and Calligraphy Office and Correspondence Office.
The demolition of the East Wing has come under fire for the demolition of the historic portion of the White House complex. It comes after the President declared that the construction of the ballroom wouldn’t “touch” the existing East Wing — something he didn’t just not make good on, but did the opposite of. The East Wing’s debris is no longer on the White House premises, though the White House Historical Association assured the public it had removed important artifacts and memorabilia.
Louvre thieves apprehended
Two suspects who allegedly perpetrated the quick and history-making robbery of the Louvre last week were taken into custody at Paris Charles-de-Gaulle Airport (CDG) this weekend. The thieves who carried out the under-8-minute theft were disguised as construction workers when they swiped eight pieces of the French Crown Jewels valued at €88 million.
The suspects were apprehended while boarding a flight to Algeria — the French authorities expect at least two additional perpetrators to be unmasked in the first art theft at the Louvre since 1998.
Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau dating
After months of speculation, Canada’s former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and 2010s pop superstar Katy Perry confirmed (we think) that they are an item on her 41st birthday in Paris. Dating speculation began to swirl when the couple was spotted out in Montreal together in July, and later grew when he attended her Lifetimes tour in Montreal alongside his teenage daughter, Ella-Grace.
Fast forward to this month, the pair was spotted kissing on board the pop star’s yacht, and two weeks later, Perry turned 41 and seemingly confirmed she’s no longer single alongside the former Prime Minister.
BONUS: My new favourite lunch spot on Yonge St
Another important event that occurred in the world this past week was my discovery of a new great lunch spot on Yonge Street — Luni Tuni convenience. What looks like a run-of-the-mill convenience store from the outside houses a sleeper-hit sandwich shop inside. I first clocked the deli when I walked into Luni Tuni during the lunch hour, and I smelled the toasted bread and saw the line of office workers from the area.
I only got around to trying it last week, and I’ve now tried the egg salad, tuna salad, and grilled cheese sandwiches, all of which were well-made and delicious. The egg and tuna sandwiches have just the right ratio of salad, lettuce, and tomato (if you, unlike me, choose to include it) and they’re available on toasted white or wheat bread. The grilled cheese is seared delicately on a panini press and emerges with a perfect cheese pull and fully buttered bread.
The sandwiches land wrapped in red-and-white checkered paper and delicately set in a perfectly sized white paper bag. Also on the menu are breakfast sandwiches like egg, cheese, and bacon, and lunch sandwiches like BLTs. Most sandwiches run between $5 and $7. Luni Tuni is located just across the street from New Balance, on the subway side of Yonge Street, on the corner of Shaftesbury Avenue.
